Owned by cricketer Romesh Kaluwitharan, Kalu’s Hideaway is a small, simple eco-friendly hotel and a good base from which to explore Uda Walawe National Park. The hotel sits just a mile from the famous Elephant Transit Home and is nestled within five acres of gardens and surrounded by lush forest and tropical shrubs. The property has 14 rooms, a pool, a small spa and a restaurant serving a-la-carte dishes. It’s worth noting the Kalu’s Hideaway does receive outside guests for food, so lunch times can feel a bit busy. Service as a whole can be patchy at this hotel, though despite this we feel this is a worthwhile choice due to its close proximity to Uda Walawe National Park, one of the best areas for spotting wild elephants.
The 14 rooms are spacious and decorated with white walls, chunky furniture and comfortable beds. They are clean and comfortable but by no means luxurious.
