Galle Fort is home to less than 200 houses, originally the homes of merchants and traders. Galle Fort Hotel now takes the place of one of them; it’s an original 17th century home and offers visitors the chance to indulge in its history.  Think antique wooden floors, four-poster beds, peaceful verandas and a boutique pool at its centre. The restaurant is a real highlight, with an elaborate menu of Chinese, Western and Thai dishes. Its popularity does mean that outside guests do drop by from time to time.  There are 11 rooms in total arranged over three floors; these encircle the central courtyard so don’t expect views of Galle’s historic rooftops. All rooms are air-conditioned and are elegantly furnished with wooden beds, crisp white linens and mosquito nets. The Garden Suites open directly onto the poolside and are smaller than the other rooms. The Loft Suites open onto a wide shared balcony; these are two-story, with a king-size bed upstairs and a living room and bathroom downstairs. The Library Suite is larger again with two double beds. For families or two couples travelling together then you may want to splash out on the Grande Apartment, which has two double rooms. This is a lovely charming property, which receives very good feedback.
