Perched on the eastern side of Passikudah bay, the brand-new Anilana has a glorious position overlooking the ocean. The property has been styled very tastefully, with a lofty and open lobby that somehow manages to mix traditional Sri Lankan style with the space-age, and gives onto the manicured lawns and cool-blue swimming pool. The Deluxe rooms are dotted around the pool in two-storey cabins, with the Beach rooms further down towards the sea, and benefiting from a little more privacy. There are some studio rooms and extensive suites in the main building, which have stunning views thanks to their elevation.
There isn’t a huge amount to do at the hotel, which is exactly the reason you would go there. Yes, there are cooking classes, the option to go on a lovely catamaran cruise, snorkelling over the reef, or relaxing by the beach and pool, but by the time guests reach Passikudah they are usually hankering after a bit of sand between the toes, and nothing more. The only thing we like to mention is that the beach goes straight into the reef (there is a pontoon that takes you out into deeper water, which is protected by another reef further out) so there aren’t any shallows suitable for splashing around in.
